Our Team

Our team has backgrounds in business, environmental and social science, energy, transportation, biotech & pharmaceuticals, IT consulting, product design, and publishing and editing. Between us, we have many decades of experience in different aspects of corporate sustainability assessments, sustainability program management and corporate communication strategies. Our global experience helps us provide our clients with a comprehensive approach to sustainability issues and build bridges between best practices from around the world.
Dr. Bernd Kasemir (Director) focuses on the intersection of strategy, management, and reporting for corporate sustainability programs. His work often involves making sustainability indicators, such as those developed by the Global Reporting Initiative, accessible and easy to use for internal management systems and external reports. With his broad background, which includes a Ph.D. in chemistry from ETH Zurich, postdoctoral work in environmental sociology at Harvard, and training in business administration at IMD, he brings an integrative perspective to clients’ sustainability initiatives.
Dr. Stephan Lienin (Director) helps clients design sustainability strategies and measures and is an expert in sustainability communication. He holds a Ph.D. in natural sciences from ETH Zurich, and developed methods for analyzing energy and mobility systems at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Since 2002, he has led the sustainserv team in coordinating the mobility projects of “Novatlantis – sustainability at the ETH domain.” He also uses his extensive communications training in coaching, program management, and coordinating multistakeholder processes.

Dr. Matthew Gardner (Director) applies his background in environmental research, technology, and education to a variety of engagements, including organizational development efforts, real estate projects, sustainability assessments, and education and communication projects. In his work he employs a multidisciplinary approach that couples technical, quantitative expertise with a commitment to clear and concise communication. He has a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and spent ten years in environmental research and education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Monica van der Weele (Senior Consultant, Zurich) previously worked for over a decade on global, large-scale Enterprise Resource Planning system implementations (i.e. SAP), specializing in supply chain management. Monica’s know-how is further comprised of solid project, as well as program and change management skills with a keen focus on designing sustainability data management systems and developing strategy-driven key performance indicators with clients. Her postgraduate education at the University of St. Gallen is rooted in information management systems.

Samuel Perret (Consultant, Zurich) is an experienced program manager. A focus of his work is to help diverse stakeholders align their interests, by ensuring mutual understanding and agreement across all phases of complex projects. His education spans from product development (with a degree in industrial design) to business economics (with a master of advanced studies in general management), and includes ongoing training in environmental management. As part of his work, Samuel currently coordinates a large, multistakeholder public/private partnership project focused on mobility in the region of Basel.
adrians biopic_web Adrian Siegrist (Consultant, Zurich) has over three years of international experience, working as a carbon consultant in the United Kingdom for the world’s largest logistics provider and its customers. He has managed projects in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, providing services such as carbon footprinting of international supply chains and assessing opportunities for cost and carbon reductions. Adrian also co-developed software solutions for carbon management, which have been implemented to multiple thousands of sites across the globe. He holds a Master of Science from the ETH Zurich with a major in atmospheric physics, bringing wide and profound subject matter expertise to the sustainserv team.
Nina Alves (Consultant, Zurich) has a broad background in the field of communications and event management. She holds a diploma in media- and communications as well as a master in business administration with a major in marketing from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. During her studies she gained international experience through an exchange programme in Sweden. After graduating in 2008, Nina gathered professional experience in smaller and larger companies in corporate communications. Her work at Sustainserv primarily involves marketing and communication activities.
Fabian Scherer (Consultant, Zurich) brings a broad background in environmental and sustainability science.He has gained professional experience doing internships in clean air science in Vietnam, with a Swiss clean air agency, and in sustainability consulting for the construction sector. He has a masters degree in environmental science from the ETH Zurich, with a major in atmospheric and climate science and a minor in sustainable energy use. His work at Sustainserv focuses on corporate carbon accounting, carbon strategies and corporate carbon accounting software development.
Nigel Gurnett, MEM (Consultant, Boston) is a 2008 Environmental Management graduate of the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Nigel has a wide variety of work experience including many years in the field of Horticulture & Landscaping. After Graduate studies and an Undergraduate degree in Business Administration, he successfully completed a 3 month independent internal EH&S audit in Europe at Chubb Security for United Technologies Corporation. This was followed by a 6 month internship at ‘Ceres’ the creator of GRI, which gave him a firm foundation in GRI based reporting and analysis.
sarah_web Sarah Nichols (Consultant, Boston) will soon be a 2010 Simmons College MBA graduate, with a concentration in Business Sustainability and Principled Leadership. Sarah brings 10 years experience to Sustainserv in marketing, business development, and client relationship management within the consumer products, and professional services industries. After completing her undergraduate degree at Fordham University in Communications, Sarah worked for companies such as Tom’s of Maine and Dancing Deer Baking Company in understanding the implications of sustainable business models. Sarah has also traveled to China and Ecuador to study and gain a greater perspective on sustainability in emerging economies.

Andrew Witherbee (Director of Business Development, Boston) brings over twenty years of experience to the Sustainserv team, including relationship sales, business development, and marketing within the consumer, technology, and nonprofit management sectors. Andrew served as a Director of Business Development for two technology start-ups, MyWay.com (a CMGI-owned company) and @once, a full-service e-mail marketing provider, where he was responsible for developing partnership strategies with leading multinational brands.

Amanda Elkin (Project Editor, Boston) has worked for the past ten years as a freelance editor and project manager specializing in the fields of environmental science, sustainability, and business. She is formerly the editor of Whole Terrain journal, the assistant managing editor of Orion magazine, and a manuscript editor at Harvard Business Press. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Studies.
Dr. John Glyphis (Consultant, Boston) brings an unusual combination of scientific and extensive professional experience in nonprofit management to the Sustainserv team. Upon completion of a master's degree from Harvard's Kennedy School (1995), he has helped both larger and smaller nonprofits with strategic planning, new program development, and facilitation for fundraising and development strategies. His special interests are in green building and green planning.
