Our Team

Our team has backgrounds in business, environmental and social science, energy, transportation, biotech & pharmaceuticals, IT consulting, product design, and publishing and editing. Between us, we have many decades of experience in different aspects of corporate sustainability assessments, sustainability program management and corporate communication strategies. Our global experience helps us provide our clients with a comprehensive approach to sustainability issues and build bridges between best practices from around the world.

Dr. Bernd Kasemir

Dr. Bernd Kasemir (Director)

focuses on the intersection of strategy, management, and reporting for corporate sustainability programs. His work often involves making sustainability indicators, such as those developed by the Global Reporting Initiative, accessible and easy to use for internal management systems and external reports. With his broad background, which includes a Ph.D. in chemistry from ETH Zurich, postdoctoral work in environmental sociology at Harvard, and training in business administration at IMD, he brings an integrative perspective to clients’ sustainability initiatives.

Dr. Stephan Lienin

Dr. Stephan Lienin (Director)

helps clients design sustainability strategies and measures and is an expert in sustainability communication. He holds a Ph.D. in natural sciences from ETH Zurich, and developed methods for analyzing energy and mobility systems at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). He also uses his extensive communications training in coaching, program management, and coordinating multistakeholder processes. Stephan Lienin is managing director of a large project on the future of urban mobility (Zukunft urbane Mobilität) and and president of the board of the white cat services AG founded in 2011.

Dr. Matthew Gardner

Dr. Matthew Gardner (Director)

applies his background in environmental research, technology, and education to a variety of engagements, including organizational development efforts, real estate projects, sustainability assessments, and education and communication projects. In his work he employs a multidisciplinary approach that couples technical, quantitative expertise with a commitment to clear and concise communication. He has a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and spent ten years in environmental research and education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Monica van der Weele

Monica van der Weele (Senior Consultant, Zurich)

previously worked for over a decade on global, large-scale Enterprise Resource Planning system implementations (i.e. SAP), specializing in supply chain management. Monica’s know-how is further comprised of solid project, as well as program and change management skills with a keen focus on designing sustainability data management systems and developing strategy-driven key performance indicators with clients. Her postgraduate education at the University of St. Gallen is rooted in information management systems.

Adrian Siegrist

Adrian Siegrist (Senior Consultant, Zurich)

has over three years of international experience, working as a carbon consultant in the United Kingdom for the world’s largest logistics provider and its customers. He has managed projects in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, providing services such as carbon footprinting of international supply chains and assessing opportunities for cost and carbon reductions. Adrian also co-developed software solutions for carbon management, which have been implemented to multiple thousands of sites across the globe. He holds a Master of Science from the ETH Zurich with a major in atmospheric physics, bringing wide and profound subject matter expertise to the sustainserv team.

Claudia Egger

Claudia Egger (Senior Consultant, Zurich)

focuses her work at sustainserv on the consulting of companies and organisations in the field of sustainability communications. Previously, she was the project leader for the first worldwide Corporate Citizenship Report of a globally active, leading Swiss industrial company. She also has several years of broad experience in Corporate Communications, editorial work and international relations. Claudia Egger has a degree in political science from the Universities of Lausanne and Granada and a masters degree in international relations from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. She is about to accomplish the Professional Program in Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting at University of California, Berkeley.

Till Berger

Till Berger (Senior Consultant, Zurich)

is active in applied research and development and accompanying processes in the field of sustainability. Before joining sustainserv, he worked for 8 years as a consultant in an environment office in Basel and led an incorporate association for sustainable urban development. He has a Master in biology and environmental sciences and has experience in facilitation, change management, strategy development, participatory processes and modeling. The focus of his work is sustainable urban development with specialization in the areas of energy, water management, and mobility. He leads the service areas of program management and public-private partnerships.

 Dr. Ina Kaufmann

Dr. Ina Kaufmann (Consultant, Zurich)

brings her broad background and expertise to bear on diverse sustainable strategy development projects as well as organizational reporting. In addition, she coordinates the "Zukunft urbane Mobilität" programme. Previously, she worked extensively on international research projects and was responsibile for developing of a code of ethics for medical researchers. Ina Kaufmann holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Zurich where she furthermore participated in the Graduate Program of Interdisciplinary Research on Ethics at the Ethical Center and was awarded a PhD in Economics.

Debra Shepard

Debra Shepard, ALM, LEED AP (Consultant, Boston)

brings eight years of diverse sustainability management experience to the Sustainserv team. Her expertise includes assessment of sustainability programs, sustainability team coaching, greenhouse gas accounting and reduction planning, and employee engagement initiatives.  Prior to consulting, Debra worked at MIT helping to implement a campus-wide environmental, health, and safety management system, and she also developed laboratory pollution prevention and green purchasing programs.  Debra is LEED-accredited and holds a master’s degree in environmental management from Harvard University.

Zena Harris (Consultant, Boston)

has over six years of human resources experience with a large multinational engineering firm and a broad background working with stakeholders in developing countries, local government, not-for-profit organizations, and higher education.  She has an undergraduate degree in psychology focusing on industrial and organizational psychology and is nearing completion of a master’s degree in sustainability and environmental management from Harvard University.

 Clare Connolly

Clare Connolly (Consultant, Boston)

has a background in environmental science and her experience includes consulting on environmental management issues, particularly as they relate to water.  She has worked with a broad range of clients including one of the world’s largest public corporations, guiding them through the implementation of a customized stormwater management plan.  Clare currently sits on two committees of the leadership team for Net Impact, a nonprofit organization promoting the adoption of sustainability in businesses.  With a certificate in Sustainable Design, Clare continues to deepen her level of expertise in sustainability as she works toward her master's degree in sustainability and environmental management from Harvard University. 

Andrew Witherbee

Andrew Witherbee (Director of Business Development, Boston)

brings over twenty years of experience to the Sustainserv team, including relationship sales, business development, and marketing within the consumer, technology, and nonprofit management sectors. Andrew served as a Director of Business Development for two technology start-ups, MyWay.com (a CMGI-owned company) and @once, a full-service e-mail marketing provider, where he was responsible for developing partnership strategies with leading multinational brands.

Amanda Elkin

Amanda Elkin (Project Editor, Boston)

has worked for the past ten years as a freelance editor and project manager specializing in the fields of environmental science, sustainability, and business. She is formerly the editor of Whole Terrain journal, the assistant managing editor of Orion magazine, and a manuscript editor at Harvard Business Press. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Studies.
